When a Child Becomes Ineligible

When a dependent child loses eligibility, due to age, or any other reason, benefits are impacted.

You must notify the AGBenefits Service Center if your dependent child is no longer a full-time student and over the age of 19 (23 if full-time student for life and AD&D), unless state law provides otherwise, or 26 (for medical, dental and vision). Disabled dependents of any age are eligible for coverage under the plan, provided documentation is provided.

If medical, dental or vision coverage ends due to a qualified life event, you may be eligible for a continuation of coverage through COBRA. Click here for more information on COBRA.

To determine if your child is eligible for coverage under Medical, Life, Dental or Vision plans, refer to AG’s Dependent Eligibility Verification Information.

Click here to view the Summary Plan Descriptions for each of American Greeting’s Benefit Plans for more details on the impact of your benefits due to a qualified life event.

If you want to make changes to your benefits, log into myAGBenefits or call the AGBenefits Service Center at (877) 213-6240.

Health Care/Dental/Vision

If enrolled, coverage ends the last day of the month in which the dependent child turns age 26 for medical, dental, and vision coverage. For additional information on dental and vision eligibility, contact the applicable carrier.

If your dependent child is not eligible for any other reason, you will need to remove the dependent child(ren) from coverage.

Disabled dependents of any age are eligible for coverage under the plan, provided documentation requested to verify the disability is provided when requested.

Flexible Spending Accounts

You may want to make a change to your Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) election if your dependent child loses eligibility.

Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Coverage

If you elected Dependent Life and/or Optional Family AD&D and if your ineligible child is the only child, it is your responsibility to cancel coverage. (If you are not canceling coverage for all your dependents and just for one of your dependents, then you need to call MetLife directly at (833) 622-0135 within 31 days of the dependent becoming ineligible to convert to an individual policy.)

When you cancel coverage, your ineligible child may convert all or part of his/her life insurance to an individual whole life insurance contract up to 31 days after loss of coverage (or 45 days from the date the conversion notice is given to the child, if the notice is given more than 15 days but less than 90 days after the date benefits were terminated or reduced). There is no conversion option for AD&D coverage.
